North Georgia will be lucky to see about an hour of filtered sunshine Tuesday as rain makes its return to the region, according to Channel 2 Action News.

Sprinkles Tuesday morning are likely to become more widespread rain in the afternoon. Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan said there is a 40% chance of rain in the forecast Tuesday, but it is just the start of the soggy conditions to come this week.

“This afternoon, there’s going to be some steadier rain, and then tomorrow we’ve got some really wet weather coming into North Georgia," he said.

Tropical Storm Eta is to blame for the increasing rain chances, he said. The storm is expected to lift away from the central Florida coast Thursday and move toward the Panhandle, according to the latest storm track projections.

Monahan said Eta should not bring flooding like its predecessor, Zeta.

“Way in advance of it, we’re going to see some heavier downpours across North Georgia,” he said. “Wednesday and Thursday, (we have) the chance for an inch or two of rain.”

The clouds ahead of Eta are keeping North Georgia warm. Metro Atlanta is beginning Tuesday in the upper 60s, about 20 degrees above average for this time of year.

Tuesday afternoon will also be warmer than normal with a projected high of 74 degrees. The average is 66 degrees for mid-November, according to the National Weather Service.

The clouds and showers will also contribute to the lack of sunshine Tuesday, Monahan said, and Wednesday will see more of the same.

“By Thursday, though, especially by the afternoon, we’re going to break into that sun as that tropical moisture that’s with us now starts to get shoved just a little farther to the east,” he said.

Friday should be dry, but Eta’s shifting track could bring more rain to Georgia over the weekend, according to Channel 2.

Pavement could be wet in spots Tuesday morning, and the commute is already a mess, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

Multiple crashes have been reported before 7 a.m., contributing to big backups all across metro Atlanta. The latest crash has all westbound lanes of I-20 shut down at Thornton Road, the Traffic Center reported.

Drivers are advised to avoid the interstate and take Veterans Memorial Highway until the trouble clears.

In the opposite direction, delays remain after another crash that blocked multiple lanes of I-20 East at Fulton Industrial Boulevard, the Traffic Center reported.

And in Midtown, traffic is finally flowing again after a crash shut down the northbound lanes of the Buford Spring Connector at Piedmont Road, according to the Traffic Center.
